I recall a fishing trip a few years back, one of those "trip of a lifetime" deals, and my main memory is a guide who acted like he'd rather be doing his taxes--than guiding me on the river. That's a shame. Mixed in with the rivers and woodlands of my life are a few priceless guides, fellas who added color and local flavor to the trip. You know, guys who acted like they really meant it when they said they were glad to see you. Those visiting Don to fish will be amazed at the beauty and expanse of Waconda Lake, home of some of the best fishing in Kansas and the USA.  Don knows the lake like the back of his hand and not only will be able to take you to the "hot" fishing spots, but can also point out many interesting visual delights as well.  Need a smaller body of water to cast your lure across?  Don knows some great farm ponds, too!You'll never forget watching the sun set over Waconda--it's worth the trip alone.

Catch Slab Fever!

When I was a kid, a great day on the old farm pond was a stringer of bass and crappie, maybe a half-dozen. I was always thrilled, mom was always less than tickled with the fish scales in the kitchen sink. You grow up, venture far and wide and they tell you "ya can't go back home. " Well, if I had a choice of the old farm pond or a day with Don of reeling in huge fat slabs, I'd pass on the good old days. Besides, a fishing trip with Don never involves an angry bull in the back pasture. Don will put you onto walleye, slab white bass and catfish a-plenty. A fishing party last year caught over 400 keepers with 100 being an average day and mom didn't even have to clean 'em!

When the day is done and the rods are stored, it's time to relive the day's catches and near misses, time to spin a yarn or two, you know, lie like a fisherman. Don Zahourek will put you up in a comfortable house with homey comfortable beds and a full kitchen. The late Gene Hill used to write about fishless days and angling nights. Had Gene fished with Don a few times, he would have had no inspiration for fishless day recollections. And, best of all, whether it's your first trip with Don or the tenth, Don has a way about him that puts everybody at ease.

Other than a day of incredible fishing for white bass, catfish and walleye, and other species,  you can spend a relaxing night in Don's Lodge houses. The houses are fully equipped, including kitchens, and come with towels, linens, and outdoor gas grills. The only thing it's missing is your fishing party and a poker game around the kitchen table.

Most good guides can put a fellow, or lady, on to a fish. However, it takes a special touch to add fun and memories. Don has that special touch. You'll spend a day on the water with a touch of Kansas Soul. The only thing you'll end up losing is stress!
